The Silicon Steel Mill (SSM) Department of SAIL, Rourkela Steel Plant (RSP) has successfully undertaken major in-house initiative to revive critical machineries, leading to substantial cost savings and enhanced environmental sustainability. The department collective successfully revived the clarifier unit and also installed a new indigenous oil skimmer machine at the wastewater treatment facility of the Acid Treatment Plant (ATP).
For the first time since its inception, the drive mechanism of the clarifier unit underwent a complete overhaul using in-house resources. This initiative was accomplished through the collective efforts of multiple associated departments, including SSM, Design, RSM, S&F Shop, and Mechanical Shop. The successful restoration of the clarifier unit marks a significant step toward improved operational efficiency and environmental responsibility.
Also, the aging oil skimmer machine, originally imported and operational since the inception of the plant, had developed irreparable defects due to the unavailability of spare parts and technical drawings. To address the problem, the dedicated department team replaced it with an indigenous oil skimmer machine, which has now been running satisfactorily. The move represents a significant stride towards deproprietization, reducing dependency on foreign equipment and reinforcing self-reliance in plant maintenance.
The successful execution of this initiative was driven by the concerted efforts of key personnel from SSM, including Mr. Debjit Banerjee, GM, SSM (Mechanical), Mr. M R Panda, AGM, SSM (Mechanical), Mr. K C Jena, Senior Manager, SSM (Mechanical) and Mr. P K Paswan, Senior Manager, SSM (Mechanical). Their dedication and technical expertise were instrumental in completing both projects under the leadership of Mr. C.R. Misra, GM In-Charge (SSM).
Both the revived machines were inaugurated by Mr. Mishra in a function organized at the Department on 13th February, 2025 in the presence of the Senior Officers and employees of the department.
