First batch of Vacational Training commences at SAIL Rourkela Steel Plant

– 350 Engineering students congregate to learn the nuances of steelmaking

The Vacational Training-2025 for the undergraduate Engineering students commenced at SAIL, Rourkela Steel Plant (RSP) with the orientation programme held for the 1st batch at Gopabandhu Auditorium in L&D Department on 12th May 2025. Notably, 350 students of different engineering colleges from across the country have joined the training in the 1st phase to learn the nuances of steel making. Mr. P K Sahoo, CGM (L&D) presided over the inaugural session. Present on the occasion was Ms. Chaitali Das, GM (L&D).

The objective of the programme was to familiarize the participants regarding the activities of the integrated steel plant and apprise them of required safety precautions to be taken during the training programme.

During the one day orientation programme the students were informed about the historical perspective of RSP, process flow, products and safety rules and guidelines through presentations and audio-visuals. To give an immersive experience to the trainees, a digital walkthrough of complete production chain of the integrated steel plant are being shown through a VR Film to them.

Thereafter they were assigned to different departments where they could learn the functions and prepare project reports under their designated guides. Mr. K K Jaiswal, DGM (L&D) anchored the programme while Mr. S K Sukula, Deputy Manager (L&D) coordinated the overall programme.

Notably, every summer hundreds of students from various branches of Engineering related to the employees of the Steel Plant join the Vacational Training being provided by the Plant and learn the nuances of Steel making. Students from not only Odisha but from all over the country join the course as a part of their internship. Exposure to the technicalities and functioning of a massive integrated steel plant widens the mental horizon of the students and also shapes their outlook in many ways.

Keeping in view the influx of large number of applicants, the training has been scheduled to be conducted in three batches. The training period would vary from 30 to 60 days depending upon the curriculum requirement.
