The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has successfully minimized service disruptions caused by kite flying during festivals like Independence Day and Janmashtami, when the risk of entanglement of metallic-coated kite strings with overhead equipment (OHE) is usually high. In the past, such incidents led to frequent trippings and delays, but the number of cases has steadily reduced from 102 in 2021 to just 11 in 2025. This achievement is the result of both preventive engineering measures and the proactive cooperation of the public.
To address the issue, DMRC has deployed quick-response maintenance teams, installed insulation sleeves on catenary wires at sensitive locations, modified OHE structures, shifted return conductors, and increased clearance between live and earthed wires. Regular inspections with Catenary Maintenance Vehicles (CMVs) and public awareness campaigns have further strengthened safety. Together, these measures have ensured uninterrupted metro services during the festive season, showcasing DMRC’s commitment to passenger safety and operational efficiency.
DMRC has also run an awareness campaign advising the public to refrain from kite flying near Metro 25000 Volt OHE wires as it may prove dangerous/fatal. The public has also cooperated proactively thereby resulting in minimal cases of trippings being reported this year.
