Coal India Limited (CIL) is exploring the feasibility of setting up data centres in decommissioned mines, with four sites shortlisted- Umrer (WCL), Saraipali in Korba (SECL), Himgir Rampur near Jharsuguda (MCL), and Nigahi (NCL). The PSU has engaged consultants for a comprehensive study covering site assessments, demand forecasts, global and domestic industry trends, models like hyperscale, colocation and edge facilities, as well as factors such as AI, IoT, 5G, and cloud adoption.
The exercise will also examine renewable integration, opportunities for Tier-2 and Tier-3 cities, and challenges unique to mine-based facilities, including geotechnical issues, connectivity gaps, environmental concerns, and operational costs. This diversification aligns with India’s Digital India and Make in India missions while repurposing redundant assets for high-value infrastructure. The final feasibility report is expected by Q3 FY26. Meanwhile, India’s coal output dipped marginally by 0.6% to 381.75 MT during April–August FY25, with Coal India contributing 280.15 MT, though August alone saw an 11.5% year-on-year rise to 69.87 MT.
