Re-trial in five 1984 anti-Sikh riots cases: HC

New Delhi: The Delhi High Court on Thursday ordered that, “Re-trial in five 1984 anti-Sikh riots cases in which all the accused were acquitted in 1986, observing that the killing of men of a single community were not “simple murders” and that the “police, prosecutors and even the courts appeared to have failed the victims.”

Delhi High Court ordered re-trial in five cases registered on the complaints of Daljit Kaur, Swaran Kaur, Jagir Kaur and Baljit Kaur by a Bench of Justices Gita Mittal and Anu Malhotra.

Triple Talaq

Supreme Court to sit in vacations to hear triple talaq case

New Delhi: The Supreme Court will hear on the 11th of May the pleas challenging the validity of triple talaq and polygamy practices among Muslims. A bench comprising Chief Justice J S Khehar and Justice D Y Chandrachudon Thursday fixed this date for commencement of hearing. The matter will be heard by a Constitution bench during the summer vacations.

The All India Muslim Personal Law Board had earlier told the Supreme Court that the pleas challenging such practices among Muslims were not maintainable as the issues fell outside the realm of judiciary. It had also said that the validity of Mohammedan Law, founded essentially on the Holy Quran and sources based on it, cannot be tested on the particular provisions of the Constitution.

Shree Mahalaxmi Corporation Limited booked under Rs 164.99 crore fraud: CBI

New Delhi: Criminal Bureau of Investigation on Wednesday booked a case against Shree Mahalaxmi Corporation Limited for allegedly misusing funds given to it by the SBI bank.

According to the statement given by CBI, “A case of forgery was registered against Shree Mahalaxmi Company and two of its directors for cheating against a Kolkata-based steel product manufacturer for allegedly causing a loss of over Rs 164.99 crore to the State Bank of India.”

Shree Mahalaxmi Corporation Pvt Ltd was found guilty for allegedly misusing various credit facilities given to it by the Bank and the FIR alleged that, “The Directors of the company presented cheques under the credit facility without having any real transactions.”

One nation, one tax: Lok Sabha passes four crucial GST Bills

New Delhi: Lok Sabha on Wednesday passed four Key Bills related to GST. The bills were passed after a right-hour-long debate. The bills are -- Central GST, Integrated GST, UT GST and GST Compensation Bills.

The Central GST deals with taxation related to Centre, integrated GST deals in taxation of inter-state movement of goods and services while the Union Territory GST Bill covers taxation in Union Territories. The compensation law has been prepared to give a legislative backing to the Centre's promise to compensate the states for five years for any revenue loss arising out of GST implementation.  Replying to around eight hour long debate, Finance Minister ArunJaitley said, the GST will replace various indirect taxes with a new tax regime which will ensure free flow of goods and services across the country. He said, the goods will become slightly cheaper after multiplicity of taxes is removed.  He said, the object of GST is to have one tax and each assessee with one assessing officer. Responding to members’ questions, the Minister said under the GST, for one commodity there will be only one tax rate in the country.
