New Delhi (NM Bureau): With the civic polls in the trouble torn Jammu and Kashmir province of India is round the corner, the government is now mulling on giving life cover insurance and security to the candidates who venture into polls. The northern most province of India, Jammu and Kashmir, has been terror infested with India alleging Pakistani trained terrorists infiltrating inside Indian territory and disturbing peace.
The announcement to give life insurance to the candidates was made by the governor of the state in an exclusive interview with an Indian English magazine The Week.
''We are going to provide an insurance cover of Rs 10 lakh to every candidate,'' J&K Governor Satya Pal Malik told a magazine.Malik told the magazine that the government will provide the candidates with security and if the candidates were feeling insecure at their place of residence, the government will shift them to a safer location.
The statement of the governor of Jammu and Kashmir as the militant groups operating in the valley like the Hizbul Mujahideen have put out warning to punish any person who stands up as a candidate for the local body polls due in October and November this year. The warning was followed by burning of three local body offices in South Kashmir area in the last one week.
Meanwhile, the two major regional parties in the state of Jammu and Kashmir, the National Conference(NC) and the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) have called for the boycott of the polls quoting their differences with the central government on the issue of autonomy to the state.
Jammu and Kashmir has remained a bone of contention between the two neighbouring countries of India and Pakistan since their independence in 1947. British rules while giving freedom to the Indian territory, divided it into two countries of India and Pakistan and left it to the royalties to chose which country they wanted to join. The king of Jammu and Kashmir acceded his territory to India only after a tribal attack happened from Pakistani side and a part of the territory went to Pakistan. Ever since both sides have fought four wars and allege each other of interfering in each other’s internal matters.
