Nagpur, August 19, 2026 : “The ability to turn adverse circumstances into favourable ones is management,” said Padma Shri awardee and Chairman of Solar Group of Industries Satyanarayanji Nuwal, while addressing students of the Indian Institute of Management Nagpur on Wednesday. He was speaking at a felicitation ceremony organised by IIM Nagpur to honour him on being conferred the Padma Shri for his contribution to trade and industry.

Sharing lessons from his own journey, Nuwal said challenges should be viewed as opportunities to learn and grow. “If there are challenges before you, consider them a blessing from God,” he said.

Nuwal also stressed that professional competence alone does not define success. “You can be a good professional, but success in life is possible only with good character,” he said, urging students to develop strong values alongside professional skills.

He advised management students to develop an understanding of material science, which he described as an important area for future technologies and industries. Speaking about the growing role of artificial intelligence, Nuwal said AI was entering every field, but technological advancement should not weaken one’s connection with culture and roots.

Nuwal also spoke about India’s growing self-reliance in defence manufacturing and Solar Group’s work in developing indigenous technologies. He said the company’s counter-drone system, including the Micromax missile, is expected to be ready by October. He also spoke about the development of a universal air bomb compatible with aircraft manufactured by both NATO and Eastern countries.

Earlier, Dr Bhimaraya Metri, Director, IIM Nagpur, felicitated Nuwal on behalf of the institute. In his address, Dr Metri highlighted Nuwal’s journey from humble beginnings to building a leading Indian enterprise and said his life and experiences offered valuable lessons for management students.

The ceremony was attended by faculty members, officers, staff and students of IIM Nagpur. The programme provided the IIM Nagpur family an opportunity to celebrate Nuwal’s national honour and draw lessons from his journey in entrepreneurship, leadership, resilience and nation-building.

Addressing the gathering as Guest of Honour, Dr Abhijat Chandrakant Seth, Chairperson of the National Medical Commission, said India now has more than 820 medical colleges and that the country’s responsibility now is to raise standards, not simply add numbers.

“The ultimate measure of our success will not be how many doctors we are going to create, but what kind of doctors we are going to create, who will be serving the society,” Dr Seth said. “We cannot create a two-tier medical education system, where students in some institutions have access to excellent faculty, rich medical material, simulation facilities and research opportunities, while other students receive significantly fewer opportunities.”

On artificial intelligence, he said, “Modern education must prepare students not merely to use AI, but to understand it as well. AI should never replace professional responsibility and accountability. The doctor must remain accountable for decisions made in the care of patients. That is where technology ends and humanity begins.” He cited NBEMS data showing close to 50,000 doctors have completed structured online AI training in 2026, and that the board’s CPR programme reached approximately 20 lakh healthcare professionals in 2023.

Dr T. Dileep Kumar, President of the Indian Nursing Council (INC), spoke about the Council’s work building simulation-based nursing education, drawing a comparison with pilot training.

“The passenger’s safety is in the hands of the pilot. The pilot is generally trained through simulators, and we, the doctors and nurses, are responsible for patient safety,” Dr Kumar said. He cited a National Council of State Boards of Nursing study showing up to 50 percent of a BSc Nursing curriculum can be taught through simulation, and described how the INC, with Jhpiego, Laerdal Medical India and SGT University, Gurugram, built India’s first National Reference Simulation Centre, followed by a second at the Sajjalashree Institute of Nursing Sciences, Bagalkot.

“Hardware is very easy to get. By spending the money, you can get the hardware. But software is very important. What is software? Software is the teachers, the faculty, and they need to be trained to integrate simulation as a method of teaching. It is a big challenge,” Dr Kumar said.

He said the INC has trained close to 2,000 nursing faculty in structured simulation programmes, signed an MOU with the Digital Health Academy for a six-month AI nursing course, and expanded the Nurse Practitioner Critical Care programme to around 66 institutions. He added that India has been elected for the first time to the board of the International Council of Nurses, and has submitted a shortlisted bid to host the ICN Congress in 2029.

Dr Richa S Debgupta, Co-Chair of the ICC National Healthcare Committee and Executive Vice President at Fortis Hospitals, said the forum’s theme, “Excellence in Medical Education, beams with Quality,” reflected the moment healthcare is in. “While medicine evolves, one thing must remain constant, the quality of the healthcare professional we prepare. Medical education must therefore go beyond knowledge. It must build competence, judgment, compassion, curiosity, and character,” Dr Debgupta said.

Dr Chaitra B.A., President, Medical Students Association of India brought the student perspective to the forum, opening with an account of exhaustion during internship postings. “A larger workforce doesn’t necessarily mean a stronger workforce. We have to ask where these professionals are going, what conditions they are working in, whether they are adequately trained, whether they can afford to stay in the system,” Dr Chaitra said, citing MSAI’s policy paper on human resources for health.

On AI, she said, “The question is not whether AI belongs in medicine, it already does. The question is whether our medical education is preparing students to use it responsibly.” She called for students to have a more direct role in curriculum design and assessment, adding, “Exhaustion is not a competency, and burnout should definitely not be a workforce strategy.”

Dr Ritika Sud, Professor of Medicine, Lady Hardinge Medical College walked participants through the shift to Competency Based Medical Education (CBME), introduced nationally in 2019. “It was a very subject-oriented, teacher-oriented curriculum where there was more emphasis on rote learning, memorising facts over application. There was no structured early clinical exposure,” Dr Sud said of the earlier system.

She said CBME introduced more than 2,600 defined competencies across the MBBS curriculum, the Demonstrate-Observe-Assist-Perform (DOAP) method, and the Attitude, Ethics and Communication (AETCOM) module, taught through role play and standardised patient encounters and assessed on an ongoing basis. She added India now has approximately 706 medical institutes offering around one lakh MBBS seats a year, and named faculty readiness and examination culture as continuing implementation challenges.

The forum made one thing clear: the numbers in Indian medical education, colleges, seats, simulation centres, are no longer the hard part. Faculty, curriculum design and preparing students for an AI-integrated system are. That was the one point nobody on the dais disagreed on.

The new educational campus has been developed with the objective of providing students with a more enabling and enriching environment for modern, quality-driven, technology-enabled and holistic education. Keeping pace with the evolving needs of the education sector, the campus is envisioned as a hub for initiatives integrating management education, skill development, modern technology, research, innovation and the Indian Knowledge System (IKS).

The foundation stone of the new campus was unveiled by Shri Chandrakant Dada Patil, Hon’ble Minister of Higher and Technical Education, Government of Maharashtra, who graced the occasion as the Chief Guest. The campus was formally named by Shri Suresh (Bhaiyyaji) Joshi, Hon’ble Member of the Akhil Bharatiya Karyakarini of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS).

Mumbai: As India increasingly looks towards technology to solve complex, citizen-facing challenges, the ability to first identify the right problem and understand its human impact is becoming as important as developing the technology itself. Reflecting this approach, Prin. L. N. Welingkar Institute of Management Development and Research (WeSchool) hosted the We4Tech 6.0 Exhibition & Final Jury Round, providing students with a platform to develop and showcase technology-enabled solutions to real-world problems.

The sixth edition witnessed enthusiastic participation from 101 teams comprising 606 students, up from 76 teams in the previous edition. Following multiple stages of evaluation, 12 teams were shortlisted for the final jury round, where students presented their projects and ideas before the jury. The shortlisted teams included Jalnidhi, Vendorverse and Prism, among others, with the projects reflecting a wide range of citizen-focused challenges.

Some of the projects showcased at the exhibition addressed everyday challenges through practical, technology-enabled solutions. The students explained that one project focused on the lack of hyper-local, real-time information on waterlogged roads during Mumbai’s monsoons, using a crowd-sourced application where people can report waterlogging, share photographs and provide updates, with AI-based verification to ensure reliability. Another project addressed the challenge of tracking expenses and developing consistent savings habits, transforming conventional expense tracking into a gamified experience where users can set personal savings goals, receive alerts when they move away from those goals and use a virtual pet to create an emotional connection with saving. The students highlighted that their aim was to make these solutions more relevant, interactive and useful in everyday life.

Prof. Kaustubh Dhargalkar, Dean – Business Design, Innowe, NISP & REDX, WeSchool, said, “The enthusiasm among the students is overwhelming. Last year we had 76 teams, and this year we have 101, demonstrating the rising interest and comfort with technology to create tech-enabled solutions for citizen-facing problems. As part of the initiative, relevant projects will also be taken forward for consideration with appropriate stakeholders, creating opportunities for promising ideas to move beyond the academic environment and towards potential real-world application.

An Audience Poll further added a public dimension to the exhibition, allowing visitors to explore the projects, interact with participants and vote for the Most Impressive Project. पेड़Care emerged as the People’s Choice Award winner, highlighting the audience’s appreciation for student-led innovation with social relevance.

The highlight of the celebrations was Naya Bharat, a theatrical production that seamlessly blended drama, live music, dance and tableaux to present a compelling reflection on India’s journey from its past to its emerging future. Conceptualised as a fusion of history and contemporary India, the production drew inspiration from the musical pieces “Jab Zero Diya Mere Bharat Ne” and “Beete Kal Se Humko Seekhte Jaana Hai.”

Structured as a magical museum adventure, the story followed four students who are taken to a museum during their holiday, only to find themselves transported into a world where history comes alive. Guided by the enigmatic Curator, Mr. Matrix, the students encounter historical figures as well as contemporary trailblazers from technology, agritech, sports and space.

Drawing inspiration from the school’s much-loved drama activity, Night Watchman, the production adopted a familiar and engaging theatrical format to connect young audiences with India’s past, present and future. Rather than concluding with a conventional message, Naya Bharat ended with a question addressed directly to the audience: “How will you write the next chapter?” The question underscored the central message of the production that the younger generation holds the pen to shape India’s future.

In his Independence Day address, Dr. Skand Bali, Principal, HPS Begumpet called upon students to ‘embrace technological progress without losing their individuality, cultivate civic responsibility, and rise above divisions of caste, creed, language and race.’

The day concluded with interactive breakout sessions including “Cap Your Identity” and “Doodle Your Destiny,” where students collaborated, reflected on their strengths and visualised their future through creative exercises. These experiential sessions encouraged participants to define their personal identities, articulate their aspirations and prepare for the innovation challenges and competitions scheduled for Day Two.

Unlike conventional career counselling events, the YOLO Summit combined thought-provoking conversations with practical, hands-on learning. Every session was carefully designed to bridge the gap between classroom theory and real-world execution by helping students develop entrepreneurial thinking, financial literacy, AI readiness, communication skills and emotional resilience.
