99 people have tested positive for Covid-19 at Dharwad’s SDM College of Medical Sciences on Friday, according to reports. This takes the total number of cases in the college to 281. Out of the 281 cases, only 6 patients are symptomatic, according to District Collector Nitish Patil.

Patil said all cases were “breakthrough infections”, meaning the patients had received both doses of a vaccine. At the same time, 33 students below the age of 18 and a staffer have tested positive at a private boarding school in Dommasandra in Whitefield.

Karnataka logged 402 fresh Covid-19 cases and six deaths on Friday, taking the total number of infections to 29,94,963 and the toll to 38,193. Bengaluru Urban continued to top the list of cases (224), as the city saw 129 discharges and one death. Total number of active cases in the state is now 6,611.

result of 66 fully vaccinated students and staff of the college had turned out to be positive following testing of over 300 students. More people from the college are being tested today.

The samples of the infected people will be sent for genome sequencing. “The students were fully vaccinated… We will be sending a few samples for genome sequencing to check if there’s a new variant,” state health commissioner D Randeep said.

The health commissioner said a freshers’ party at the college on November 17 is responsible for the outbreak.

Chairman of Manipal Hospital and member of Covid task force team in Karnataka Dr Sudarshan Ballal said the Covid cluster is a cause of concern.

“There was a large cluster that has turned to be positive and all of them were at an event. This means the variant of this virus is infectious. Second concern, all the students were fully vaccinated which means there is a immune escape phenomena,” he said.

However, he said, the disease is not severe. “But happening at this juncture is certainly concerning to us… We should go back to stringent Covid behavior,” he added.

At least two women and a four-year-old toddler lost their lives while over six others were rescued on Wednesday morning after an under construction four-storey building collapsed in Bengaluru’s Pulikeshi Nagar area.

The deceased has been identified as Manjudevi, wife of a construction worker Ram Balak belonging to one among the four families staying in the building. The other woman who died has been identified as Nirmala, and the deceased child as Anushka. Rs 5 lakh compensation will be given to the family of the deceased, the state government has said.

All those rescued have been shifted to Bowring Hospital and are under observation.

According to Disaster Management officials, a coordinated effort by firemen, National Disaster Response Force, State Disaster Response Force, and Quick Response Team of the Civil Defense began swiftly.

On Wednesday morning, the accident spot was visited by Deputy Chief Minister G Parameshwara, local MLA and former minister KJ George and City Mayor Gangambike Mallikarjun.

Preliminary investigation has revealed that permission was only granted for three floors; however, the building had an extra floor which affected the foundation of the building, leading to the collapse.

Speaking to reporters, the Mayor said that that action would be taken against the engineer who sanctioned the construction in violation of the BBMP’s guidelines. She further said the building will be demolished by the BBMP’s technical team once the rescue operations conclude.

This tragedy comes less than a month after three labourers had succumbed to their injuries after the collapse of an under-construction water tank in Bengaluru’s Amruthahalli.

With two Congress legislators resigning from the assembly the coalition govt of Cong Jds in Karnataka has suffered yet another setback.

After the resignations of Vijayanagar MLA Anand Singh and Gokak MLA Ramesh Jarkiholi, the Congress is left with 77 legislators whereas its partner JD(S) has 37. Together, the alliance now has just a wafer-thin majority of 114 legislators in the 224-member Karnataka assembly, where the magic figure is 113. On the other hand, the main opposition BJP has 105 MLAs, there is one legislator of the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) and an independent MLA.

While Singh said he decided to resign over some unfulfilled demands, Jarkiholi in his resignation complained that his party had “ignored” his seniority after dropping him from the cabinet last year.

It is being speculated that Singh may join the BJP. However, the MLA rejected the claims of falling prey to Operation Lotus, a strategy adopted by the BJP in 2008 to shore up its numbers in the assembly by making opposition MLAs resign and seek re-election on BJP ticket. Singh is a three-time MLA from Vijayanagara and had won the constituency in 2008 and 2013 on a BJP ticket.

Reacting to the news, state BJP chief and former chief minister BS Yeddyurappa said the resignations reflect large-scale unease in the ruling coalition and the government will collapse under its own weight.

“Only after the collapse of this government we can explore the constitutional provisions to form the new government. There is no question of elections. We are a strong force of 105 members and we have every right to make a claim for forming the government if the present one collapses,” he said.

JD(S) leader and chief minister HD Kumaraswamy, who is in the US for the foundation-laying ceremony of a temple, tweeted that he was aware of the developments taking place in the state adding that the “BJP was daydreaming to destabilise the government”.

The Kumaraswamy government has often accused the BJP of horse-trading in the past one year with rumours of legislators of mainly the Congress switching over to the saffron party.
