Welham Girls’ School Outperforms Global Benchmarks in PISA for Schools

Bengaluru, September 30, 2025: Welham Girls’ School (WGS) has reinforced its leadership in education with an outstanding performance in the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) for Schools, an international benchmarking initiative by the OECD.

WGS students secured an average of 525 in Reading, 525 in Mathematics, and 533 in Science, not only above the India average (Reading: 483, Mathematics: 510, Science: 498) but also ahead of the OECD average (Reading: 476, Mathematics: 472, Science: 485).

In Reading, WGS scored 525, second only to Singapore’s 543, outperforming countries such as Ireland, Japan, Korea, China, Canada, the United States, Australia, and the United Kingdom. In Mathematics, the school’s score of 525 placed it ahead of Switzerland, Canada, Ireland, Denmark, and the UK. In Science, WGS achieved 533, placing just after Singapore, Japan, Macao (China), and Chinese Taipei, while surpassing Hong Kong, Canada, Australia, Switzerland, and the UK.

Beyond academic scores, WGS also outperformed OECD averages in adaptive learning parameters, including differentiated learning, individual support, and topic adaptation, reflecting the school’s focus on personalised and progressive teaching methods. Unlike traditional assessments, PISA evaluates how well 15-year-old students can apply knowledge to real-life scenarios across Reading, Mathematics, and Science. The framework measures critical thinking, analytical reasoning, application of knowledge in unfamiliar contexts, problem-solving, collaborative skills, and social-emotional learning.

Through this lens, Welham students demonstrated capabilities on par with the world’s most advanced education systems. Their ability to navigate complex, real-world problems reflects the school’s commitment to progressive teaching practices that go beyond rote learning to nurture future-ready, confident young women. With these results, Welham Girls’ School has set a new benchmark for Indian education, proving that an institution deeply rooted in India’s ethos can excel on the world stage while shaping globally competitive talent.
