PM Modi Lays Foundation Stones for NEEPCO's Hydro Power Projects in Arunachal Pradesh

ITANAGAR. Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited Arunachal Pradesh to lay the foundation stones for two major hydroelectric projects by NEEPCO in Itanagar. The projects—Heo Hydro Electric Project (240 MW) and Tato-I Hydro Electric Project (186 MW)—are being developed in partnership with the Arunachal Pradesh government, with an estimated cost of over Rs 3,700 Crore. These initiatives aim to tap into Arunachal Pradesh’s vast hydro potential, bolster sustainable energy generation, generate employment, and support regional socio-economic development. PM Modi highlighted that India’s vision of becoming a developed nation by 2047 depends on contributions from all states, with the Northeast playing a crucial role. He also reiterated India’s renewable energy target of 500 GW by 2030 and emphasized that these projects will enhance Arunachal Pradesh’s status as a power hub, fostering growth and development in the region.

Located in the Siyom sub-basin of Shi Yomi district, the Heo project (3×80 MW) and Tato-I project (3×62 MW) will promote sustainable energy, create employment opportunities, and bring socio-economic benefits to Arunachal Pradesh. These projects are expected to transform the region’s energy landscape, support regional development, and help achieve India’s broader clean energy and economic growth goals under the vision of Viksit Bharat (Developed India) by 2047.

The event was attended by prominent dignitaries, including Arunachal Pradesh Governor Lt Gen K T Parnaik (Retd), Chief Minister Shri Pema Khandu, and Union Minister Shri Kiren Rijiju. NEEPCO, a subsidiary of NTPC Limited since 2020, has been a key player in power generation in India’s Northeast since 1976, with a current capacity of 2,057 MW across diverse energy sources. NTPC Limited, India’s largest power utility with an 83 GW capacity and plans to add 30.90 GW of renewable energy by 2032, continues to lead India’s efforts toward achieving Net Zero, ensuring energy security and sustainable development nationwide.
