Rahul Gandhi targets at ‘Modi system

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi slammed the Narendra Modi-led Central government  over the worryingly rising cases of black fungus or mucormycosis across the country.

Hitting at Prime Minister Modi for cases of mucormycosis in COVID-19 patients, Gandhi said not only vaccines but there is also a “huge shortage” of medicine .

In a tweet in Hindi, Gandhi said, “It is only in India that there is an epidemic of black fungus along with the COVID pandemic due to the inefficiency of Modi system. There is a shortage of vaccines as well as of medicines. And to deal with this, the Prime Minister will be telling people to clap and clang utensils.”

Several cases of black fungus have been reported throughout the nation leading to many states having declared it an epidemic. States including Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Gujarat, Telangana, Tamil Nadu, Odisha, Karnataka, and Assam have declared it a notifiable disease under the Epidemic Diseases Act 1897.

Earlier chief Sonia Gandhi in a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi cited the acute shortage of vital drug – Amphotericin-B – needed to treat black fungas  and underscored the need to “take immediate action” to remedy the situation.

Several thousand coronavirus patients in the country have contracted Mucormycosis, a deadly and aggressive fungal infection, compounding the country’s troubles as it reels from the pandemic.

PM Modi, in a virtual address to health workers from Varanasi yesterday, warned against what he called the “new challenge of Black Fungus”. He further described the virus as an unseen and shifting enemy.

The illness, the Congress leader pointed out, is not covered in Ayushman Bharat – scheme that provides free health insurance to India’s poor and marginalised families – and most other health insurance products.

“I would request you [PM Modi] to kindly take immediate action on this matter to bring relief to the large number of patients being afflicted by Mucormycosis,” Ms Gandhi said in the letter.
