In Tennis, world number three Roger Federer has made a shocking quarter-final exit from the US Open, the fourth and final Grand Slam of the season, in New York. The Swiss, who had won the Wimbledon and Australian Open earlier this year, was stunned by 24th seed Juan Martin del Potro of Argentina in four sets, 5-7, 6-3, 6-7, 4-6.
In the semi-finals, Del Potro will face world number one Rafael Nadal who beat Russian teenager Andrey Rublev in straight sets in the other quarterfinal. The other Men's Singles semi-final will be played between Kevin Anderson and Pablo Busta.
In Women's Singles, local girl Coco Vandeweghe ended Karolina Pliskova's reign as world number one after she made it to the semi-finals with a 7-6, 6-3 win. Vandeweghe will now face her fellow American Madison Keys in the last-4. Madison's win over Kaia Kanepi in the other quarter-final ensured the first all-American semi-final line-up at the US Open since 1981. Venus Williams will face Sloane Stephens in the second semi-final.
The women's doubles quarterfinal match of India's Sania Mirza and her Chinese partner Shuai Peng match against the 5th seeded duo of Hungary's Timea Babos and her Czech partner Aandrea Hlavackova was postponed last night due to rain. The match was suspended at 2-2 and later postponed for today.
